Nordmanns-Forbundet's Membership Drive 2010

From April 1, 2010 to December 15, 2010, Nordmanns-Forbundet will be conducting a world-wide membership drive in an effort to heighten global awareness of our organization and the important work we do.  All members are encouraged to participate and to submit as many new members as possible in order to maximize their chances of winning one of 11 fantastic prizes at the end of the year.  Prizes will be given according to the greatest numbers of new paying members submitted.  If several participants of the drive have submitted the exact same number of new members, a drawing will be held for those participants.

New Honorary Consul General

As of January 15, 2010, former Vice-President Walter F. Mondale has officially stepped down as Honorary Consul General for Norway.  Mr. Mondale's valuable contributions towards US-Norwegian relations have strenthened commercial and educational ties between the two nations in addition to promoting cultural exchange.  We salute the former Vice President and wish him all the best.

While wishing a fond farewell to one formidable man, we warmly welcome another.  Mr. Gary L. Gandrud has been chosen to take over the prestigious role of Honorary Consul General for Norway.  As one of the founders of the Norwegian American Foundation, former President of the Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce in Minneapolis, Board member of the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, Mr. Gandrud brings a wealth of knowledge,  experience and know-how that will undoubtedly make for an absolutely seemless transition.  We heartily congratulate Mr. Gandrud.

Proud to be Norwegian!

After a bit of a slow, dissappointing start at the 2010 Olympic games in Vancouver, BC, Norway has, once again, proven itself to be a nation with some of the strongest, most talented winter-sport athletes around the globe.  Finishing fourth in the total medal count with 23 medals (9 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze), Norway reached unfathomable milestones these Olympic games in Vancouver.  As reported by  The Wall Street Journal on February 24, "Norway has won more Winter Games medals (in total) than any other nation.  Last week it became the first country to win 100 Olympic gold medals, and Tuesday it hit the 300-medal milestone (the U.S. is second on the all-time list with dozens fewer)."  So, after the grand finale with Petter Northug Jr's outstanding performance yesterday at the finish line of the Men's 50km, Mass Start Classical, we're quite certain every one of the 4.7 million Norwegian citizens will stand up and say, "I'm proud to be Norwegian".

St. Olav Medal

February 9, 2010, Harry T. Cleven, editor of The Norseman published by Nordmanns-Forbundet, was honored by his Majesty, King Harald V, with the St. Olav Medal.  "The Medal of St. Olav was founded by King Haakon VII on 17 March, 1939. It is conferred as 'a reward for services in advancing knowledge of Norway abroad and for strengthening the bonds between expatriate Norwegians and their descendants and their country of residence'."

The medal was presented to Mr. Cleven by Brigadier Nils Petter Granholt, Chief of H.M. The King's Military Staff.  Brigadier Granholt preceeded the medal presentation with a speech honoring Cleven's accomplishments and contributions over the last three decades.
