February e-News 2010

Norgesskolen 2010

Norgesskolen 4 - 23 July, 2010

Norgesskolen is a summer school for Norwegian children and young people living abroad. Our students are from 9 to 18 years old and reside in different parts of the world. The main purpose of the program is to teach students Norwegian, and to make them acquainted with Norwegian culture and Norway in general - in short, make them aware of how it is to be Norwegian and live in Norway. It is not necessary to be or to speak Norwegian to come to Norgesskolen - you just need a keen interest in Norway and the Norwegian language.  Students are divided into groups by age and language skills to get the best out of their Norwegian lessons.

The school has several hours of instruction and a variety of recreational activities every day that are varied and fun. We go on tours, and celebrate the 17th of May and a Norwegian Christmas in July.  We go camping, fishing, kayaking - and take trips to the beach enjoying the sun-filled summer days. So at Norgesskolen, nobody has time to get bored!

February's Featured Artist

Christian Skredsvig

February's featured Norwegian artist, Christian Skredsvig (1854 - 1924) was both a painter and a writer.  Born in Modum, Buskerud in 1854, Skredsvig studied painting in Oslo, Copenhagen, Munich and Paris.  It was in Paris that he became the first and only Norwegian to win the gold medal from the Saloon in Paris for painting "Une ferme à Venoix".  This award was one of the most coveted of it's time.

Skredsvig's neo-romantic style was greatly inspired by landscapes and by animals.  His paintings were also influenced by the nature surrounding Hagan in Eggedal; Skredsvig's final resting place in 1924.

For more information on the artist, click on the painting to the right, appropriately named "Høst i Hagan".
